Hyaluronic acid: application from inside and outside for long-lasting health and youth

Hyaluronic acid is a popular ingredient for skin care products and is considered the anti-aging agent par excellence. However, hyaluronic acid is also used in more invasive treatments, for example as an injection into the knee to lubricate joints or in cosmetic surgery as an injection to combat wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes. However, since hyaluronic acid is also a molecule produced naturally in the body and is an essential component of skin and joints, it is natural to ask how hyaluronic acid works when it is taken in capsule form. We'll get to the bottom of this very question in today's blog post.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a so-called polysaccharide and can be produced by the body itself. Hyaluronic acid is probably best known for its ability, bind water (up to 6 liters of water per 1 gram of hyaluronic acid). About 50% of the hyaluronic acid contained in the body is stored in the skinwhile the rest is found primarily in intervertebral discs, synovial fluid and cartilage tissue.

Why is hyaluronic acid important?

Hyaluronic acid has several functions and positive effects especially in connection with healthy aging. Due to its water-binding property, hyaluronic acid has a hydrating effect and ensures that joints and skin remain firm and supple. However, hyaluronic acid levels begin to decline as early as age 20 and reduce to about half by age 50.

What is the best way to use hyaluronic acid?

Applying hyaluronic acid directly to the skin can provide a quick, superficial anti-aging effect. However, even particularly high-quality forms of hyaluronic acid with low molecular weight cannot penetrate deep enough into the skin layers.
The intake of hyaluronic acid via a dietary supplement (e.g., in capsule form) aims at a long-lasting regeneration of the skin. In one study, a significant effect on the appearance of the skin was observed after just a few weeks of oral hyaluronic acid intake. The skin of the test subjects appeared more luminous and elastic and the results indicate that orally administered hyaluron inhibits skin wrinkles and improves skin condition.
A major advantage of taking hyaluronic acid compared to external application is, of course, that the entire body - and not just the top layer of skin - issupplied with hyaluronic acid. This can, for example, improve joint health can be improved, for example, by preventing inflammation and relieving pain.
In principle, however, there is nothing to be said against supplementing the application from the inside with a superficial application from the outside.
